It is located at the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Beitbridge Town is the southernmost town of the country and is in Matabeleland South Province. The name also refers to the Beitbridge Border Post, the busiest inland port of entry in Sub-Saharan Africa. The town, founded in 1929, was for many years the terminus of the railway from Pretoria, until a rail connection to Rutenga was built in 1974.<\/p><p>Beitbridge town was granted its town status in July 2007 through Statutory Instrument 120 of 2007.Previously a Town Board under the Beitbridge Rural District Council administered the town. A Town Council was then established and came into being on the 1st of July 2007. The Town Council area was divided into six wards, each with an elected councillor. Its mandate as a local authority is to provide services to the community of Beitbridge. Almost a decade later after town status, Beitbridge graduated into Municipality status in 2018 through Statutory Instrument 28 of 2018, Proclamation 1 of 2018.<\/p><p>The total coverage of the town is 83square kilometres. The population was estimated at 42 137 inhabitants and 11825 households according to the 2012 national census. The current population is estimated at around 60 000 inhabitants.\u00a0 Due to the proximity of the town to South Africa, most people from the inland districts flock into Beitbridge to do trade and growing urban settlement in terms of both population and urban development.\u00a0Beitbridge is the most populous urban settlement in Matabeleland South Province. As per 2012 Census report, the town is home to 42137 inhabitants-a population that was more than double that of the provincial capital, Gwanda (20227). Beitbridge urban population has been doubling every ten years for the past two decades (11 000 in 1992 and 42137 in 2012). At this growth rate, it was estimated to be about 60000 in 2017 and to be at around 80000 in 2022. More than half of the urban population in Matabeleland South (80162) stays in Beitbridge (42137). It is noteworthy that the town is growing in terms of population, physical development and service delivery potential in light of the fact that it acquired town status in2007 and municipality status in 2018. This is an opportunity in case of urban development projects, new retail and manufacturing industrial development. This therefore means that in terms of labour force, Beitbridge has enough manpower, which in turn can become customers in the event that they are employed.\u00a0The high proportion of the active is a &#8216;population bonus&#8217;, which if carefully tapped may contribute to economic advancement of the Municipality. As the southern gateway, into the country, Beitbridge is linked to South Africa and the rest of the network through road, air and rail transport. This simplifies the movement of goods in and outside Beitbridge, in terms of bringing in raw materials and exporting finished goods. The town also has access to all telecommunications networks such as Econet, Telone, Telecel, Netone, Africom, and Zol\/liquid Telecom. These include the Limpopo River and Zhovhe Dam. The Limpopo River supply the town throughout the year. During the dry spells water is drawn from the Zhovhe dam (capacity of 133million m<sup>3) <\/sup>into the Limpopo River and subsequently to our offsite dams. We are privileged to have a new water treatment plant with a capacity to pump 4000m3 per hour.
